Miedzyrzecz Castle

Medieval castle in Miedzyrzecz
Poland, Poznan
The medieval castle of Miedzyrzecz is located in a small town of the same name in western Poland. It is located on a hill and is surrounded by a moat of water. The castle was built by order of the Polish king Casimir III the Great in 1350. Over the following centuries, Miedzyrzecz was repeatedly captured and destroyed. In 1474, the castle was captured by the Hungarian king Matthias I Corvinus. In 1520 Miedzyrzecz was badly damaged by the Teutonic Order. In 1655 the castle was destroyed by the Swedes. In the first half of the 18th century, the castle was in such a dilapidated state that even after reconstruction it could not be used for its intended purpose. After the Second Partition of Poland, the castle was taken over by a noble Prussian family, who used it as a warehouse and winery. Since 1945, a museum has been operating on the territory of the castle. In the middle of the 20th century, Miedzyrzecz was restored, which saved it from becoming ruins.

In the Poznań Voivodeship there is an interesting attraction - the Castle in Mesopotamia (Miеdzyrzecz, Mendzyrzecz, Meseritz) - a town that arose from a settlement on the road leading from Magdeburg to Gniezno, and was first mentioned as Mezerichi by the medieval chronicler Titmar of Merseburg during the campaign of 1005 of the German king Henry II. The castle (rather a fortress), very pretty, I would even say a toy one (like the Oreshek fortress, but bigger), memorable. It is located on an islet (which was originally a hill) between two floodplains of the Obra and Paklitsa rivers.
