This area is one of the dominants of Kazimierz, which was a separate city until the end of the 18th century. The town hall building is located on the square - now an ethnographic museum. The first town hall in this city was built in the 14th century, and the remains of a stone building from 1414 can still be seen in the basement and on the ground floor. When Kazimierz became part of Krakow, an industrial and craft school was opened here, and later the building was handed over to the city's Jewish community. In 1996, a memorial plaque was erected on the east side of the building - a relief of the arrival of Jews in Poland in the Middle Ages by Henrik Hochmann in memory of King Casimir the Great, who allowed Jews to settle in Poland. A similar plaque was installed in 1906 on the north side of the building and destroyed in 1939 by the German occupiers.

In 1970, a fountain with a sculpture of Bronislaw Chromy "Three Musicians" was installed on the square.
In 1900, a memorial plaque was erected on one of the buildings on the square in honor of the founding of the university in 1364 by King Kazimierz the Great. University buildings were erected in this area of ​ ​ the city. Some of their foundations were discovered during excavations in 1868.
