The museum was founded on October 7.1879 by the decision of the Krakow City Council. Initially, the museum was housed in two halls on the second floor of Krakow's cloth rows in the central Market Square. The museum's collections have multiplied thanks to the generous donations of Krakow's citizens, including paintings, sculptures, engravings and handicrafts. The museum was joined by new branches in historic buildings, including the houses of late Krakow artists. In 1934, construction began on a new, modern museum building.→
