The museum was solemnly opened on November 30, 1994. Since December 1, 2004 it has become an independent cultural institution (before that it was a branch of the Krakow National Museum).
The museum exhibits a collection of about 6,500 items of Japanese art donated to the National Museum by the Krakow critic, writer and collector Feliks "Manggha" Jasienski in 1920. It hosts exhibitions and events, as well as ongoing activities such as Japanese language courses, tea ceremony courses, ikebana art courses and exhibitions. The museum also houses the Polish Bonsai Society.
