House of Jan Matejko

Jan Matejko House Museum, Jan Matejko Museum, Muzeum Jana Matejki, Dom Jana Matejki
Poland, Krakow
The House of Jan Aloysius Matejko in Krakow is a four-storey mansion of the 16th century located on Florianska Street in the Old Town. Here the great Polish artist was born, lived and created his famous canvases. After Matejko's death in November 1893, the journalist Marian Sokolovsky, through a local newspaper, called for the creation of a museum in the house dedicated to an outstanding fellow countryman. Soon the Jan Matejko Society was founded, through whose efforts and donations from the townspeople the mansion and part of Matejko's paintings were purchased for the future museum. From May 1896, the artist's living room and bedroom were opened to the public. For several years, according to the projects of two architects, the building was first rebuilt to accommodate the museum exposition, and then repaired.
On June 24, 1904, the Jan Matejko Museum was opened, becoming a branch of the National Museum of Krakow. In the bedroom on the first floor and in the room on the second floor where Jan was born, you can see his personal belongings and get acquainted with the atmosphere of that time. On the third floor is the artist's studio with his working tools. Among the exhibits of the museum are paintings, a library, a collection of ancient oriental items: swords, dishes, fabrics and outfits, instruments of torture that were used in the Middle Ages.
