Chapel of Sigismund

Royal Chapel, Jagiellonian Chapel, Sigismund's Chapel, Kaplica Zygmuntowska
Poland, Krakow
Sigismund's Chapel is one of nineteen chapels surrounding the Wawel Archcathedral in Krakow.

The German art historian August Ottomar Essenwein called it in 1867 "the pearl of the Renaissance on the northern side of the Alps". The chapel is an example of pure Florentine renaissance outside of Italy.

This chapel is not to be confused with the 19 chapels of the Wawel Cathedral - it is the only one decorated with a gilded dome. After the death of the first wife of King Sigismund I the Old Barbara of Zapolya, the widowed king decided to build a mausoleum of his dynasty. He commissioned the Florentine architect Bartolomeo Berecci to build the chapel, who showed the king the first sketches in 1517. Construction work was carried out in 1519-1531, in 1533 the chapel was consecrated. Other Italian masters also helped the architect Berechchi during the construction.

After the death of his first wife, King Sigismund decided to build a mausoleum for the entire royal dynasty. He commissioned the creation of the chapel to the Florentine architect Bartolomeo Berecchi. Construction was completed in the 16th century. The Sigismund Chapel became the prototype for the design of funeral burials in Poland for centuries to come and played a huge role in the development of Polish architecture. Entrance to the Cathedral of Saints Stanislaus and Wenceslas is free. To visit the Sigismund Chapel, you need to purchase a complex ticket for 12 PLN (price 2015).
