There are many temples on the quiet street of Copernicus. But this, in my opinion, is the first. No wonder it was given the status of a basilica, and a monument to its creator was erected under the temple wall. By the way, this is the only such example in Krakow.
The Roman Catholic Church belongs to the Jesuit monastery, which has existed in this place since 1868. But the church itself was built in 1909-1912 according to the project of architect Franciszek Monczynski. The outstanding building has a facade and red brick walls decorated with gray stone. According to the architect, it is a harmonious combination of modernism, Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque. The slender bell tower rises to 68 meters. The entrance portal is decorated with a stone sculpture of Jesus Christ by Carol Hukan and two lead sculptures by Xavier Dunikovsky, symbolizing humanity seeking solace in the heart of the Lord. Directly above the entrance is a mosaic "The Piercing of the Body of Christ" by Jan Bukowski.
The interiors of the temple impress with their grandeur, beauty and sophistication - sculptures, icons, Venetian mosaics, stained glass. Franciszek Monczynski, Xavier Dunikowski, Karol Hukan, Petr Stakhevych, Jan Bukowski, and Leonard Stroynowski worked on them. The first service in the consecrated church was held in 1912, but due to the World War, the interior design of the church continued until 1921, and the last sculptures were installed in 1930.
In 1960, the pope granted the church the status of a small basilica. Under the east wall of the church on a granite pedestal stands a bronze monument to the building temple, holding a model of the building. Author - sculptor Xavier Dunikovsky.
