high gate

Brama Wyzynna, das Hohe Tor
Poland, Gdansk
The High Gate is the main city gate of the 16th century in Gdansk, Poland. According to the type of structure, this is a small fort with three arched entrances. In the past, the structure had massive drawbridges that were raised at night for defense purposes. The Dutch architect Jan Kramer worked on the architecture of the building, and the famous German artist Wilhelm van der Block framed the facade, on which he placed the coats of arms of the Commonwealth, Prussia and Old Gdansk, which have survived to this day. Today it houses the Regional Tourist Information Centre.

The High Gate (German: das Hohe Tor) is a Renaissance city gate in Gdań sk, now on the main highway (Okopowa and Wał a Jagiellonskie streets). Until 1895 it was in the fortifications of the 16th century, between the bastion of St. Elizabeth and the bastion of Punishments and was the main gate to the city, opening the Royal Route (down the Long Street).
