Prison Tower and Katownia (German Peinkammertor) - was founded in the second half of the 14th century as a medieval fortification of the Main City in Gdansk. Together with the Prison Tower there was a gate group (barbican) of Dluga Street. Katownia was rebuilt in 1593-1604 by Anthony van Obbergen, the decorations were made by Willem van der Meer (among others, the headless capstone sculpture). Thanks to Michal Enckinger, the Prison Tower reached its current height in 1508-1509. After the erection of modern fortifications, the function of the entire building was changed to a torture chamber (katova, kat - executioner), a courtroom and a prison. On the east side of the Prison Tower was a pillar, the site of many executions. Currently, a branch of the Gdansk Museum is located in Katownia.
