The oldest district and the main historical attraction of the city of Manila - "Intramuros" in translation means "surrounded by walls." The area was founded at the end of the sixteenth century and carried the functions of a fortification. Mostly Spanish military personnel and their families lived here. Prior to the period of rapid urbanization, Intramuros was the central and only part of the city of Manila.
