Vondelpark is a public city park of 47 hectares. The park was opened in 1865 and was originally called Nieuwe Park but later renamed Vondelpark, after the 17th century playwright Jost van den Vondel. About 10 million people visit the park every year. The park has a film museum, an open-air theater, and a playground.
