Begeinhof is a closed community of beguines (women who were not tonsured, but simply served God and had the opportunity to leave the monastery at any time). The Begijnhof buildings themselves date back to the 14th century and form a ring of buildings that are surrounded on all sides by canals. Today it is such an oasis of peace and quiet, where you can take a break from the noisy and bustling city. Pay attention to the house at number 34, it is called the Wooden House (Het Houten Huis). This is one of the oldest buildings in Amsterdam, dating from around 1420.
