Founded in 1873, Sri Mahamariamman Temple is the oldest and richest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur. It is located on the outskirts of Chinatown. In 1968, the temple building underwent a refurbishment, acquiring new decor and an ornate Raja Gopuram tower, made in the style of southern Indian palaces. From its inception to the present, the temple has served as the main place of worship for immigrants from India and other Hindu countries. In addition, the temple building is an important architectural monument of the city.
