Templo Mayor - "Main Temple" - an open-air museum in Mexico City, created in 1987 on the site of a complex of religious buildings of the Aztec city-state of Tenochtitlan. The central place of the complex was occupied by the Great Pyramid of Huitzilopochtli, 45 meters high, on top of which were the temples of the sun god and war Huitzilopochtli and the god of rain and fertility Tlaloc. Most of the complex was destroyed in 1521 by the Spanish conquistadors. The stone blocks of the temple were used by them to build the
Catholic Cathedral. During the ongoing excavations until 1982, more than 7,000 artifacts and the remains of the lower part of the Great Pyramid were found.
The museum consists of several halls: archeology; rituals and sacrifices; flora and fauna; tribute and trade; the hall of Huitzilopochtli; hall of Tlaloc. The museum and excavation site with the ruins of the pyramid is located near
Constitution Square.
