Three Cultures Square
The Square of the Three Cultures and Santiago de Tlatelolco, Tlatelolco Square
Mexico, Mexico
The Square of the Three Cultures with the Church of Santiago de Tlatelolco is located in the Tlatelolco district in Mexico City, at the place where on August 13, 1521, the decisive battle of the Spaniards of Cortes and the Aztecs of Cuauhtemoc took place, as a memorial plaque on the square reminds of.
400 years later, on October 2, 1968, at the same place, hundreds of demonstrators, mostly students, were shot by soldiers on the orders of President Ordas. In memory of the dead, a stele was erected on the square.
The Square of the Three Cultures is named after the architectural monuments of different eras located here: the Aztec culture is represented by the foundations of the pyramid and buildings of the pre-Columbian period; Spanish culture manifested itself in the architecture of the Catholic Cathedral of Santiago Tlatelolco; modern Mexican culture is embodied in the Tlatelolco Tower, which now houses the building of one of the universities.
