The Baroque National Palace of Mexico City is located on the east side of
Constitution Square. Built by the Spaniards for the Viceroy on the site of the destroyed palace of Montezuma II in the second half of the 16th century, it was subsequently reconstructed. Currently, the palace is the residence of the President of Mexico, the National Archives is located here. Every year, on September 15, the President delivers a solemn speech on the occasion of Mexico's Independence Day from the central balcony of the palace. Part of the palace is open for tours, with frescoes by the famous artist
Diego Rivera. On an area of 450 square meters, the history of Mexico is depicted in chronological order from 1521 to 1930.
