Basilica of the Holy Virgin of Guadalupe
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Mexico, Mexico
The Basilica of the Holy Virgin of Guadalupe was built on the site that was opened to the young Mexican peasant Juan Diego during the first appearance of the Holy Virgin to him in December 1531. In total, the Mother of God appeared to the young man four times, after one of the meetings, the image of the Virgin Mary appeared on his cloak. To preserve the cape and to receive pilgrims, a temple was erected in honor of the Holy Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, the most revered shrine of Latin America. Over time, the foundation of the basilica sank significantly and it was closed for a long time. In 1976, a new basilica was built nearby, designed so that the image of the Virgin Mary is visible from anywhere in the hall. Every year, about 15 million people make a pilgrimage to the Virgin of Guadalupe - this is the largest figure in the world.
