Underwater Sculpture Museum
The Cancun Underwater Museum, MUSA
Mexico, Cancun
The Underwater Museum in Cancun, the second such project by sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, was created in 2011 at a depth of about 10 meters. The beginning of the underwater exposition was the sculptural group "Quiet Evolution" of 403 figures depicting the history of mankind from the ancient Mayan peoples to our time. The sculptures are fixed on a pedestal weighing 2 tons, which allows them to withstand the influence of waves and currents. In the future, new expositions were added, and by 2015 there were about five hundred sculptures. The main purpose of creating such a museum is to show how much the environment suffers from the careless attitude of people towards it. The installation of sculptures made of special materials that contribute to the regeneration of reefs is designed to provide a favorable environment for corals and other marine life. Every year the museum is visited by about 750,000 visitors from all over the world. You can get to the underwater museum by boat from the harbor for pleasure boats in Cancun.
