The Islamic Center and Grand Mosque is considered one of the largest centers of Islam in all of Asia. The Islamic center with a gilded dome is located at the crossroads of two streets - Chandani-Magu and Meduziyarai-Magu.
The center opened in 1984. To date, this six-story building is fully funded by the Sultanate of Brunei, Libya, and Saudi Arabia. The Islamic Center is primarily the place where the meetings of the Supreme Council take place. In addition, within the walls of the Islamic Center there is a large library and a conference hall, as well as classrooms for students.
The main advantage and pride of the Islamic center is the Great Mosque, which at one time can accommodate more than five thousand people within its walls. The prayer hall of this mosque is named after Sultan Mohammed Takurufanu, who once liberated the Maldives from the Portuguese.
The Islamic Center and the Grand Mosque are the symbols of faith and prosperity of the Maldives. One of the best architects in Malaysia worked on the construction of these buildings. The room is always bright, the floor is laid with marble tiles, and the prayer hall in the Grand Mosque is completely covered with Pakistani carpets.
