Auberge de Castille mansion
Auberge de Castille, Auberge de Castille, Il-Berġa ta' Kastilja
Malta, Valletta
Auberge de Castille, which means "Castilian tavern" is the residence of the Prime Minister, located in Valletta. Auberge de Castille was designed and built by the Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar in 1574. The mansion became the official residence of the knights of the language of Castile, León and Portugal, one of the most influential in the order.
In 1741, Auberge de Castille was completely renovated, but later, during the French occupation (1799-1800) and the Second World War (1939-1945), it suffered several damages. After the knights left the island, Auberge de Castille was used as the headquarters of the British army. Since 1972, after the independence of Malta, the residence of the Prime Minister has been located there.
