In the main city of the island of Gozo, Victoria, there is a well-fortified citadel towering at an altitude of 150 m above sea level, from which the surroundings of the island of Gozo are clearly visible. The Cathedral of Santa Maria is located inside the citadel. It was erected in 1697 on the ruins of an earlier church destroyed by an earthquake, which, in turn, was erected on the ruins of the Roman or Phoenician period. Among the images in the cathedral, the Birth of the Virgin and the Immaculate Conception, by the artist Michele Busuttil, attracts attention.
