In the historical part of Budva, one of the most famous and oldest city attractions is located - the Church of St. John. Near it rises a bell tower, which is noticeable from afar.

The current church is built on the ruins of an earlier church from the 7th century. The construction that has survived to this day was erected in the 15th century. Fragments of ancient masonry and foundations are now stored in the Budva Museum. In 1867, a bell tower was added to the church, complementing the ensemble.

The Church of St. John is a small, three-aisled basilica with pronounced Gothic features. The simple, even ascetic façade contrasts vividly with the rich decoration of the temple. The most valuable paintings and icons of masters of the 15th - 17th centuries are kept in this church.
In particular, the famous icon of the Virgin and Child, better known as the Budva Mother of God, is preserved here. According to legend, the author of this masterpiece is St. Luke himself. However, according to experts, the picture was painted in the 13th century. Among other outstanding canvases kept in the church, it is worth mentioning the icon of Saints Peter and Paul of the school of Byzantine masters, icons of Greek authors and many others.

Also in the church there is a magnificent library, which contains a large number of old and very rare books, ancient incunabula, archival documents. There is a small exposition at the church, where the rarest specimens are exhibited.

Tourists are also offered the opportunity to climb to the top of the bell tower, from where old Budva is visible for several kilometers around.
