House of the Blackheads

Melngalvju nams, Das Schwarzhäupterhaus, House of the Blackheads, Blackheads House
Latvia, Riga
The House of the Blackheads is one of the hallmarks of Riga, which attracts the attention of all guests of the city with its unusual view and quaint architecture. The building was built in the XIV century. for various meetings of townspeople, and from the 17th century. it became the property of the Brotherhood of Blackheads - an association of young unmarried merchants and merchants of foreign origin. The Blackheads used the building for their representative, business purposes and ceremonial events, their goods were also stored there. During the Second World War, the House of the Blackheads fell into ruins, but in 1999 it was rebuilt for the celebration of the 800th anniversary of Riga.
Visitors to this architectural monument will be interested not only in its unusual facade with sculptures and clocks, but also in its rich interior decoration: painted ceilings, weapons and armor, stained-glass windows with ornaments, crystal chandeliers and much more. Currently, there is a museum and a concert hall, exhibitions and official receptions for foreign delegations are also periodically held there.

Amazingly beautiful building. And the light brown tower with the blue clock looks like it was painted by a skilled artist. In the House of the Blackheads itself, it is also beautiful, like in the Hermitage - ballrooms with luxurious chandeliers, everything has been carefully restored to preserve the historical surroundings. This blue clock tower is, one might say, the visiting card of the capital of Latvia.

Right on the Town Hall Square is the House of the Blackheads. A very unusual structure in terracotta color. The facade is decorated with sculptures that are very bright in color (it seems that they have only been painted). The Blackheads are a kind of foreign merchants who have created their own community in Riga. The place is very different from the rest of the architecture.
