The pedestrianized Corniche runs along the Alzete River on the steep Bock in
Old Town of Luxembourg, looping down into the river valley around almost sheer natural walls. When passing through the street, various picturesque views of the Lower City, the valley of the Alzet River, the Church of John the Baptist, and fortifications on the Bok rock gradually open up. No wonder the Luxembourgish poet Betty Weber called this place - "The most beautiful balcony in Europe." In 1870, after the closure of the fortress, the protective walls in the Corniche area were dismantled in order to improve the visibility of the surroundings.
