Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project

Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery
Sri lanka, Bentota
The Kosgoda Turtle Farm is located on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka in the village of Kosgoda, on the shores of the Indian Ocean. This is a small farm for the breeding and conservation of the turtle population, where you can get acquainted with the whole process from laying turtle eggs to rearing turtles in special pools. The farm is also home to unique adults - an olive tortoise, an albino tortoise and a real carriage. Near the farm there is a souvenir shop where you can buy a turtle made of wood or shells as a keepsake.

The farm houses turtles ranging in age from 1 day old to over 4 years old in different pools. Small turtles are allowed. The farm also has albino turtles. Such turtles are born 1 in 500 thousand. They cannot survive in the ocean, because their shell is not hard and they are very visible in the water. They are kept in separate pools, because turtles of other species are dangerous for them. The farm has fenced incubators for keeping eggs. The farm also treats injured turtles that are missing one or more legs.
