Vaduz Castle - the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein, is located on a rocky hill in the eastern part of the capital of this small state. The castle was built as a powerful fortification with the walls of the main tower four meters thick, which could only be reached by a suspension bridge. The construction dates back to the 12th century, based on the study of the preserved foundation by archaeologists, and the first documentary mention of the castle dates back to the 14th century. Next to the main tower - the donjon, the chapel of St. Mary was erected, in the 16th century the Round Tower was built. The Liechtenstein family in 1712 acquired the county of Vaduz along with the castle, after 7 years the principality of Liechtenstein was founded.
The castle was used as an inn for a long time, but since 1938 it has been the main residence of the princely family, the art gallery of Prince Liechtenstein, one of the best private collections in the world, is kept here. The castle is closed to the public throughout the year, except for August 15, the day of the formation of Liechtenstein. On other days, you can see a model of the castle, exhibited near the Town Hall, in front of the bus terminal.

Treasury in the Alps

The princely castle rises above the capital of the dwarf European state of Liechtenstein - Vaduz. The castle is closed to visitors, with its treasures in the form of paintings by Van Dyck, Rubens and other Renaissance masters can only occasionally be seen when they are exhibited in other museums, for example, a number of works were presented in the Pushkin Museum of Moscow in 2009. A view of the castle opens up when traveling on the tourist road train "Citytrain", which passes by the main sights along the semicircle of Stä dl Street around the rock with the Prince's Castle.→
