The Asakusa area is located in the eastern part of the city. It is built in traditional Japanese style. Asakusa is best known for its ancient Buddhist and Shinto temples. The main one is Senso-ji, a Buddhist temple founded in the first half of the 7th century. During the 17th and 19th centuries, it served the Tokugawa shoguns as a place for official prayers.
