mamluk fort
Mamluk Fort, Mamluk Fort, Mamluk Fort
Jordan, Aqaba
The walls of this palm-fringed fortress have changed hands many times. In the XII-XIII centuries, the Crusaders built a castle here. Later, the fort was taken over by the Mamluks who came here, and at the beginning of the 16th century a new reconstruction took place - already under the leadership of Sultan Kansuh Al-Gauri. The fortress served as a caravanserai for pilgrims to Mecca, as well as a military facility. At the beginning of the last century, during the Arab Revolt, the troops of Auda abu Tayi, not without the help of the British officer Lawrence of Arabia, took the fort and expelled the Turks from the city.
The building has the shape of a square, fortified at the corners with semicircular towers. Numerous inscriptions relating to the medieval period of the Muslim dynasty have been preserved on the walls. Admission is free for those who have purchased a ticket to the Archaeological Museum.
