National Library of St. Marka is the largest library in Venice. Its collection includes about 13,000 manuscripts, 2,883 early printed books and 24,055 books of the 16th century.
Construction began in 1537 according to the project of Jacopo Sansovino, Scamozzi was engaged in completion in the 1580s. Paolo Veronese, Francesco Salviati, Andrea Meldolla and other famous masters of that time worked on decorating the halls of the library. As the library grew, it also occupied neighboring buildings, including the mint built according to the design of Sansovino in 1537-1547.
