St. Mark's Campanile
Campanile di San Marco, St Mark's Campanile
Italy, Venice
Campanile of St. Mark's Basilica is the bell tower of St. Mark's Cathedral in Piazza San Marco.
For the first time, a clock tower was built on this site in the 8th century. The bell tower in its present form was built in 1514. The tower served as a watchtower and beacon for ships entering the lagoon. On July 14, 1902, the bell tower completely collapsed. The reasons for the fall were earthquakes, lightning strikes and general wear and tear of the building. It was decided to restore the tower, exactly repeating the appearance and strengthening the structure. The restored bell tower was opened on Saint Mark's Day on April 25, 1912.
