Two or three minutes from the station is Piazza San Carlo, which is considered the most elegant in Turin. It was designed in 1637 and has been given the unofficial name of the "Saloon of Turin" because it houses Turin's oldest café and prestigious shops. This is not the largest square in the city, but the place is very popular with residents and visitors. The square is decorated with a bronze statue of Duke Emanuele Filiberto, erected in 1653. The exit to the square from the station via via Roma passes between the twin churches: Santa Cristina and San Carlo.
