Monastery of the Holy Spirit
Monastero di Santo Spirito, Saint Spirit Monastery
Italy, Sicily
The monastery, built at the end of the 13th century, was called Bataranni (large abbey) for its grandiose size. The silhouette of the monastery, which is a significant preserved monument of the Middle Ages in Agrigento, dominates the eastern part of the city. The monastery, surrounded by a dense garden, was built of limestone and sandstone. The most interesting details of its interior are the original design of the vaults and the stucco decoration of the nave, made by the famous master Giacomo Serpotta (XVIII century). Today, the monastery houses the city museum, the exposition of which includes a Christmas manger made by local craftsmen, as well as a model of the historical center of Agrigento.
