Cathedral of Saint Agatha
Cattedrale di Sant'Agata, Catania Cathedral, Cathedral of Saint Agate
Italy, Sicily
The Cathedral of Saint Agatha in Catania was built on the site of the ancient Baths of Akilian, the remains of which are still preserved under the Cathedral Square and the foundations of the cathedral. In the 11th century, Vaccarini rebuilt the temple, designed the facade in the Baroque style, leaving only three apses and a transverse nave from the Normans.
Inside the cathedral on the right is the tomb of the great composer Vincenzo Bellini, a native of Catania. In the depths of the right nave is the majestic chapel of St. Agatha, decorated with frescoes from the 18th century. In its left wall there is a small golden door leading to an underground crypt, where a sculpted bust of St. Agatha and an ark with her relics are kept. Above the altar of the chapel you can see a bas-relief depicting the scene of the coronation of Saint Agatha with a crown of glory. There are 3 smaller churches in the city dedicated to the martyr Saint Agatha.
