City of Taormina
Taormina
Italy, Sicily
Taormina is a historic city on the east coast of Sicily, halfway between Messina and Catania.
Taormina has 2 parts, the old town, which is located on top of a steep cliff, and Taormina Mare, which lies at the foot of the cliff. The old city is located at an altitude of about 300 m above sea level, and above it, at a height of 150 m, rises a steep and impregnable rock with a Saracen castle on its top. The main attraction is the ancient amphitheater, the second largest in Sicily after the amphitheater in Syracuse. The cathedral church and several palazzos remind of the Middle Ages.
In Taormina, an annual festival of theater, music and dance is held, and an international prize is awarded, among the winners of which is Anna Akhmatova.
