Amphitheater in Syracuse
Syracuse Amphitheater
Italy, Sicily
The amphitheater in Syracuse was built at the beginning of the 1st century BC. e. during the reign of Octavian Augustus. It has a round shape - in contrast to the semicircular Greek theater, located nearby. The Roman amphitheater has well-preserved internal passages, through which gladiators entered the arena and released wild animals. The amphitheater has four exits in the direction of the four cardinal directions. This is the third largest Roman arena in Italy after the Roman Colosseum and the amphitheater in Verona.
