Fortress of Montesaffoli
Rocca di Montestaffoli, Montestaffoli Fortress
Italy, San Gimignano
Montestaffoli Fortress is located west of Piazza Duomo, on the hill of the same name on the site of a former castle that previously belonged to the Bishop of Volterra. In 1353, the bishop's residence was rebuilt and fortified with fortification walls to protect the city. From the fortress, control over the entire city was exercised. The fortress walls have been well preserved to our times, their length is approximately 2,175 meters, and the main and secondary gates have also survived in the walls. Montestaffoli Fortress is a popular holiday destination for locals; music festivals and city holidays often take place here.
