Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie
Santuario di Santa Maria delle Grazie, Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace
Italy, Rimini
The Sanctuary of Grace is located in Viale delle Grazie. According to legend, in 1286 a shepherd waiting for his flock on the hill of Covignano carved an image of the Madonna on a tree trunk. However, he could not manage to finish the face, which the angels completed for him. The statue, made in such a miraculous way, went by sea to Venice, where it is still revered in the church of St. Martial as the "Madonna of Rimini".
At the end of the 14th century (1391–1396), a Franciscan monastery was built on the hill of Covignano to commemorate the miraculous event. However, the church was consecrated only in 1430. In the 16th century, the church was enlarged and decorated with wonderful works of art. In 1569-1578, a new church was built, which was attached to the old one. The wooden ceiling, amazing in its beauty, was transferred to the new church.
A small monastery keeps the purity and warmth of uncomplicated Franciscan architecture. Fragments of the exterior painting of the church, in particular, the "Annunciation" of the Umbrian school, approximately 14-15 centuries, were discovered under the Gothic portal only in 1919. The inside of the church was mostly painted in the 17th century.
