Fort San Leo
Fortress of San Leo, Fortress of the Holy Lion
Italy, Rimini
The fortress is located in San Leo, in the province of Rimini, 35 km from the city of Rimini. Due to its geomorphological features, the area around the fortress of San Leo resembles a rocky island. A fortress has been built here since the 15th century.
After the death of the last of the owners, the fortress went to the Vatican. The popes kept their most dangerous opponents in the impregnable citadel, including Count Cagliostro, who spent the last 4 years of his life here in solitary confinement.
