The theater of Marcellus was built in 12 BC. Octavian Augustus and named after the late nephew and successor of Marcus Claudius Marcellus. As planned, the amphitheater was supposed to surpass the first stone theater of Pompey in scale and accommodate about 11 thousand spectators. The architectural decoration of the theater of Marcellus are three tiers of arcades. The theater of Marcellus began to be built under Caesar, and was completed under Augustus. The theater building accommodated 15 thousand spectators (almost the same number now accommodates the Dynamo stadium in Kyiv). In the Middle Ages, it was rebuilt into a palazzo. And in the eighteenth century, the post office passed to the Orsini family, and became known as the Palazzo Orsini.
