The Sistine Chapel

Cappella Sistina, Sistine Chapel, Sacellum Sixtinum
Italy, Rome
The Sistine Chapel is a former house church in the Vatican. It was built in 1473-1481 by the architect George de Dolci, commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV, hence the name.

Today the Chapel is a museum, an outstanding monument of the Renaissance. Rectangular in plan with wall paintings made in 1481-1483 by Sandro Botticelli, Pinturicchio and other masters commissioned by Sixtus IV. In the years 1508-1512, Michelangelo painted a vault with lunettes and formwork, commissioned by Pope Julius II. And in 1536-1541, Michelangelo painted the altar wall - the Last Judgment fresco, commissioned by Pope Paul III.

I will not expand on the merits of this unsurpassed masterpiece by Michelangelo, I will add that other excellent artists are the authors of 12 frescoes: Botticelli, Pinturicchio, Ghirlandao, Perugimno, Signorelli, Rosselli, della Gatta, d'Antonio. Although, of course, the main titanic work was done by Michelangelo. Let me remind you that initially all the characters of the Last Judgment were depicted by Michelangelo naked, after the censorship of the church, the figures were draped by the artist Daniele di Volttara.

To get to the Vatican Museums, do not be lazy, buy a ticket via the Internet. We didn’t do this, but we didn’t want to stand in line for a day, so we bought a tour from local barkers for 42 euros, although the ticket price is only 15. A very interesting and informative tour. We saw a lot of things, the hall of geographical maps and the chapel impressed me. There are a lot of people, it is not possible to admire in silence, so we abstracted away. The tour was useful, as the pictures are simply not interesting to look at without stories.

I support the previous review with both hands. And I'll tell you about my first visit to the Sistine Chapel. We were here on a tour with a bus tour. They gave us headphones in our ears, and the guide broadcasts into the microphone. There are always a lot of people in the chapel. Naturally, the radio waves are superimposed, and nothing is really audible. My girlfriend and I caught the woof, and they did not hear that we should go out to the right with the whole group and then to St. Peter's Basilica.

I don’t even know how to convey in verbal terms the meaning of tlgl that you will see. It just needs to be seen. You will find a description of each particular fresco on the Internet. Don't bother to read, take a look. The guide will add some more information to you before viewing. A visit to the chapel is included in the tour "Vatican Museums" in bus tours. Taking photos and videos is not allowed, but believe me, you won't want to! You will just watch! Visit, visit and visit! I put 10 points, because all my expectations were met!.
