Trajan's Market, a semi-circular five-story brick amphitheater, was originally designed as part of the
Forum Trajan. It was built into the Forum complex also to avoid landslides, since the relief was disturbed during construction. There were many shops, eateries, taverns, as well as points for the free distribution of food to the population. At Trajan's market, one could buy rare oriental spices, silk fabrics, wine, fruits, vegetables, olive oil, flowers, and fish. The market with its streets gives the impression of a city. Its ruins were settled in the Middle Ages, the details of ancient architecture were used for new buildings. The market was intensively excavated only in the 1930s. 20th century Now, an exposition dedicated to the imperial forums has been opened in the premises of antique shops. Sculptural and architectural fragments found on the forums are exhibited here. Exhibitions of modern art and 20th-century Roman history are now also held in some rooms or on the terraces.
