St. Peter's Square

Piazza San Pietro, Saint Peter's Square, Piazza San Pietro
Italy, Rome
Peter's Square is the largest square not only in the Vatican, but also in Rome. It was designed by the famous Italian architect Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini in 1656-1667.
The square is framed by semicircular colonnades of the Tuscan order. In the very center of the square there is an obelisk 25.5 m high, which was brought to Rome from ancient Egypt by Caligula, and at the same time plays the role of a gnomon - the oldest astronomical instrument. The total depth of the area is 280 meters. Thanks to its grandiose dimensions, it allows you to capture the whole composition with your eye, including the massive main dome of St. Peter's Cathedral.
There are always a lot of people in the square. It is here, in front of the main cathedral of the Catholic world, services are often held with the participation of the Pope and a huge number of pilgrims who speak different languages.

Probably any person who has visited Rome, must have visited St. Peter's Square. This place is "must see", "must visit" and all the other "must" put together. The day we arrived at the Square was not an ordinary day in the Vatican. It was the day of the meeting of Pope Benedict XVI with European youth before the celebration of the New Year 2013. In just a few minutes, the area previously fenced off by the police was filled with a huge number of people. Everyone was very friendly, took pictures, walked around, then took their seats and waited.

When you admire the architectural merits of St. Peter's Square, pay attention to: 1. Bernini's columns. If you stand at certain points of the square, you can observe the optical effect conceived by Bernini - the columns of all rows of the colonnade line up in one row. 2. Guards of the Vatican. Despite their rather cheerful dress uniform (which, according to legend, was designed by Michelangelo himself), the requirements for the protection of the Vatican are very strict. They must have Swiss citizenship, be between 19 and 30 years old, be at least 174 centimeters tall, have a secondary education and have completed their compulsory military service.

St. Peter's Square is the main square of the small country of the Vatican and the main shrine of the powerful Catholic Church. It broadcasts the head of the Catholics - the Pope. The area is relatively small, there are more. But already approaching it, you see the dome of St. Peter's Cathedral and you penetrate with some kind of trepidation, although I am not a believer. The cathedral itself, the colonnade surrounding the area, impressed. The obelisk in the center of the square reminded of Egypt, because how many obelisks were taken out by the Romans from Egypt.

Maybe we were not very lucky, but the square was waiting for the official inauguration of Pope Francis, so it was lined with a huge number of benches. This did not prevent us from appreciating the beauty of the square as a whole. It was a big discovery for me that she is so small. In the photo and in the online broadcasts, it seemed much larger. The place is very interesting. Those who belong to the Catholic rite of Christianity are doubly interesting. I give 8 points. Bernini, all the same Bernini! Beautiful!.
