Column Square

Piazza Colonna
Italy, Rome
The Column Square was created at the end of the 16th century by order of Pope Sixtus V. The square is named after the column of Marcus Aurelius located on it. From the north it adjoins the Chigi Palace, where the Council of Ministers sits, and from the northwest, the Montecitorio Palace, where the Chamber of Deputies sits. In 1577, a fountain was built on the square by the sculptor Giacomo della Porta. The fountain is decorated with Carrara marble from the Apuan Alps.

The main thing on the square is the Column of Aurelius, which was erected by Marcus Aurelius on the ancient Via Flaminius. And as always, the holy fathers could not leave everything as it was. The top of the Column was removed and a statue of St. Paul was placed on top. Very nice marble fountain in front of the Column. Palazzo Chigi stands on the square (it is occupied by the Council of Ministers).
