Tiber Island is the only island on the Tiber River along its entire length. Each part of Rome keeps some kind of legend, and sometimes even more than one. According to legend, the island of Tiberina grew up on the site of the death of the malicious Roman tyrant Tarquinius the Proud, who was so cruel that the Romans overthrew and drowned him in the river. But this is just one of the legends.
The island remained unvisited for a long time, but at the end of the 3rd century BC. e. a hospital was organized on the territory of the island - the temple of Aesculapius, and over time, Tiberina turned into a place revered by the Romans.
We got to the island through the Cestio bridge, but first we crossed the Palatino bridge, looked at the broken Ponte Rotto bridge, and then, walking along the banks of the Tiber, we reached the island.
Crossing the bridge, you immediately find yourself in Piazza San Bartolomeo, where there are many tourists and street musicians. Be sure to visit, since you are on the island, the Basilica of San Bartolomeo (Basilica di San Bartolomeo all'Isola).
It is small, but very colorful inside.
The island is also home to the active Hospital of San Giovanni di Dio, better known as Fatebenefratelli.
Since 1995, the Isola del Cinema film festival has been held on the island every summer. From mid-June until the end of summer, there is an evening fair on the promenade from the island to the Sixta Bridge (Ponte Sisto) - cocktails, light snacks, live music ...
