The palace is located on the Quirinal Hill and was built in 1573 by the architects Domenic Fontana and Carlo Maderna. The Quirinal Palace was built as the summer residence of Pope Gregory XIII. The interior of the building is richly decorated with frescoes by Guido Reni and Melozzo da Forli. Currently, the palace is the official residence of the President of Italy.

The Quirinal Palace began to be built for himself by Pope Gregory XIII, the following Roman pontiffs, repeatedly rebuilt and expanded it.
