This Doric column was erected in the 2nd century to commemorate the great emperor Marcus Aurelius and his military campaign. Its prototype was
Trajan's Column. The height of the marble obelisk is about 42 m, inside it is hollow and there is a spiral staircase leading to the top. In ancient times, the column was crowned with a sculpture of Marcus Aurelius, but later it was lost and now there is a statue of St. Peter. The relief spirals tell the story of the struggle of Marcus Aurelius against his northern enemy and impress with fine workmanship and expressiveness, as they well convey the facial expressions of the figures depicted there. The Column of Aurelius is located on the
piazza of the same name in the center of Rome.
