Capitol Square is located on top of
Capitol Hill and overlooks
St. Peter's Basilica. It was built in the 16th century. designed by the famous Michelangelo.
The square has the shape of a trapezoid - at the head is the Palace of the Senators, on the sides - the New Palace (Palazzo Nuovo) and the Palace of the Conservators. The bridge square is decorated with original ellipses, which are also called “Michelangelo patterns”, and in its center stands an equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. Two amazing staircases are laid out at the entrance to the Senator's Palace, while inside the building there are stunning salons (Green Salon, Chariot Salon, Banner Salon, etc.) and now the city hall is located there. The other two palaces (Palazzo Nuovo and Palazzo Conservatori) host the
Capitoline Museums, which include a rich collection of Roman and Greek sculptures.
Today, Capitoline Square is one of the most harmonious and integral Roman squares.
