Temple of the Portun

Temple of Fortuna Virilis, Temple of Portunus
Italy, Rome
The Temple of Portun was built around 100 BC. e. in honor of Portumnus, god of harbors and rivers. It is located on the former Bull Forum, in the central part of the city, on the left bank of the Tiber. Since the Renaissance, it has been mistakenly considered the temple of Fortune Verilis. The Temple of Portun is the only temple of the Republican period that has come down to our times almost untouched. In 872, it was converted into the Christian church of Santa Maria in Gradelis, and in the 5th century it was consecrated into the church of Santa Maria Aegiziana.
