Temple of Hercules the Conqueror

Tempio di Ercole Vincitore, Hercules Olivarius, Temple of Hercules Victor
Italy, Rome
The Temple of Hercules the Conqueror was built at the end of the 2nd century BC. and was a member of the Bull Forum. The temple has a cylindrical shape and is surrounded by 19 columns. The style of architecture is very similar to the Temple of Vesta in the Roman Forum, so it was previously mistakenly considered a temple dedicated to the goddess Vesta. It was the first marble temple in Rome, which has survived almost entirely to this day. In 1132, the temple was consecrated into the church of St. Stephen, and in the 17th century - into the church of Santa Maria del Sole.

We came to the temple of Hercules the Conqueror from the side of the Palatine Bridge. The temple is a small round building surrounded by marble columns. Probably, because of its small size, it has survived to this day. In fact, this is one of the oldest buildings in Rome that has survived to this day, it was built around 120 BC. e. Perhaps it was possible to go inside, but we did not try, because there is a low iron fence around the temple. Hercules the Invincible was the god of victors - victors.
