Turtle Fountain

Fontane delle Tartarughe, The Turtle Fountain
Italy, Rome
The fountain was built in 1588 by architect Giacomo della Porta in Piazza Mattei. The Turtle Fountain, like other Renaissance fountains, was created to provide the population of the city with drinking water. The construction of the fountain was financed by the wealthy Roman family Mattei, whose palace is located next door. Therefore, the fountain was originally called the Mattei Fountain. Bronze turtles were added much later - in 1658-1659, during the reconstruction of the fountain at the direction of Pope Alexander VII.

On this square is the Turtle Fountain. The fountain was designed by Della Porta, and the turtles were later added by Bernini. There is also the Palazzo Matei di Giove. Take a walk, the fountain is very pretty.
